Research.

My research interests primarily revolve around physically informed models of audio processes, with a particular emphasis on the preservation and restoration of historic audio. The emergence of data-driven, gradient-based approaches to signal processing has opened new possibilities for recovering degraded recordings beyond what is achievable with classical DSP alone. My work explores how knowledge of the physical processes underlying historical audio technologies can inform these emerging methods, drawing on techniques from system identification, differentiable DSP, and analog modeling. Beyond presenting challenging and exciting engineering problems, this research offers opportunities to collaborate with colleagues in the humanities and at audio archives around the world and to provide students with hands-on experience working with historic media and audio systems.

DSP & Software.

I develop audio signal-processing algorithms for research and commercial applications. I founded obscureSignals to develop and release playBackEQ, a plugin for applying historically accurate playback equalization to records. For plugin development, I typically prototype in MATLAB and deploy in C++ and JUCE. My software work spans classical DSP, differentiable DSP (DDSP), numerical modeling, and machine learning, using JAX and other Python-based frameworks. I also develop embedded firmware in C for real-time audio acquisition, signal processing, and on-device machine learning.

Audio Hardware.

My work with audio hardware spans the study of historical circuits and the design of modern systems. Developing physically informed models of audio processors requires a thorough understanding of their underlying architecture. My experience with historical audio equipment also extends to repair and restoration for independent recording studios. My design experience includes analog front ends, mixed-signal circuits, PCB design, and digital audio capture systems for low-power, portable devices, as well as the design and modification of analog studio equipment and systems.

Teaching.

Recording Engineering & Music Production.

In 2006, I opened Alphabet Recording Studio, a not-for-profit recording studio in Fort Collins, Colorado. Since that time, I have worked as a recording and mixing engineer as well as a producer on hundreds of projects. After all this time, I still think making records is as mysterious and exciting as ever.
